A little bundle.
The French called it a trousseau, from trousse: a parcel of lace, linens and keepsakes packed for a new house. The word is theirs. The gesture is much older.

02स्त्रीधन स्त्रीधन
India · older than the wordstrī-dhan
Her wealth. Not a payment.
Long before that French word reached Indian English, there was स्त्रीधन: gold, silk and gifts given to the bride. Hers in law and in love. We pack her things. We do not pack a demand.

03थाल थाल
North India · the unit of blessingthāl
It has to be carried in.

Punjab · for the roadkalire
Dry fruit for the journey.
Kalire once held almonds, makhana and dried coconut, tied to the chooda so a bride would not go hungry on the way to a new village. The road became a banquet hall. The hanging gold stayed.
रास्ते के लिए सूखा मेवा। अब रास्ता एक मंडप है।
